FAQ

Can I plug any solar panel into a socket from 27 Aug?

No. Only a complete manufacturer kit listed as Compliant on ENA Register, ≤800VA, with approved fused plug lead and mounting. A panel + generic inverter is not compliant.

Do I need an electrician?

Not for an ENA Compliant plug-in kit on a modern circuit with RCD protection – that’s the whole point of SI 2026/848. You do if your consumer unit has old fuses, no RCD, socket damaged, or you use a non-compliant/DIY kit or a battery kit. Free video call with Thunder / City Plumbing can check.

Can renters/flats use it?

Yes – that’s the target market (Germany has 3M+). You need landlord/freeholder permission, and building must allow balcony fixings. Thunder Storm is lightest (3.5 kg/panel) for old railings. Listed buildings/conservation areas may still need planning consent.

What about batteries?

Plug-in solar batteries are excluded from the 27 Aug socket route. You can still buy Anker SOLIX with battery but it must be hard-wired via electrician (standard G98 route), not socket. Don’t market battery + socket as “plug-in”.

How do I notify DNO?

After plugging in, go to your DNO’s G98 Connect Direct portal (find yours at energynetworks.org), fill address/MPAN/inverter serial/panel watts. Free, no approval needed before, just notification within 28 days. Same when you unplug/move.

Is 0% VAT real?

Yes, 0% VAT on new solar installations by MCS-certified providers until 31 Mar 2027. Plug-in kits from Argos/City Plumbing include VAT at checkout – MCS VAT relief applies to installed systems, not always retail kits. We show inc-VAT prices as listed.
